ITS recommends that you install the appropriate security patches from your operating system’s manufacturer before you connect your computer to the USC network. If you have recently purchased your computer, you should have the necessary security patches installed.
Installing SentinelOne Endpoint Security Software
ITS suggests that you install SentinelOne Endpoint Security before installing the necessary security patches. SentinelOne is available for USC network users for free from the TrojanSecure website.
If your computer has been previously infected or hacked, ITS requires that you install and turn on a firewall before you connect to the network.
Downloading and Installing Security Patches
Microsoft and Apple both provide websites you can visit to keep on top of the latest patches for the Windows and Macintosh operating systems.
For Windows Operating Systems
Visit Microsoft’s Security TechCenter to sign up for email notification of the latest Windows security patches, an RSS feed of these patches, and a website that provides additional information and downloads of these patches.
You can also visit Windows Update to download and install all the required security patches for your OS if you are using Internet Explorer (IE). If you are using Firefox, Chrome, or another browser, go to the Microsoft Download Center to download and install the appropriate security patches.
For Macintosh Operating Systems
Visit Apple’s Product Security webpage for information on checking your operating system’s security and to sign up for a mailing list that will provide you with the latest Apple security updates. You should also frequently check the Software Update section of the System Preferences utility to schedule updates. You can access Software Update from the Apple pull-down menu in the upper left-hand corner of your screen.
