Create a Channel

Click the plus + button in the lower left corner of the sidebar, then select Create # Channel.

If you’re on Enterprise Grid, select your school’s “Classes” workspace from the drop-down menu, then click Next.

Give the channel a name including the term, course number, and section, [for example: spring26-buad-311-14900], click Next.

Choose channel type “Private”, then click Create.

Add People to a Channel

You can add up to 1,000 people to a channel at once. For large groups, we recommend copying a list of full names or email addresses from another channel in Slack or another service before following the steps below.

Open the channel to which you’d like to add people.

Click the cluster of profile pictures in the top right.

Click Add People.

To add a few people, search for the members you’d like to add by name, email address, or user group and select them.

To add a large group, paste the list of names or email addresses into the field.

Add Someone Who is Not a Member of the Workspace

If you receive a message that the person(s) is not a member of the workspace, you will see this box to add them to the workspace. Choose Next and Click Add.

Error Messages

If you receive an error message such as “This person(s) has been removed from this workspace” or “This person is already in your workspace, but their account is deactivated”

Include the error, name of the workspace, channel name and email address(s) of the person(s) you are trying to add.

Using the USC Grading and Roster System (GRS)

Professors can get a list of students through the grading and roster system (GRS) and add the users to the channels created.

Go to USC Grading and Roster System (GRS) – https://arr.usc.edu/faculty-staff/grades/

Click the Roster tab.
Select the semester you wish to work in.
Select the Course and select Download Roster.

A file in CSV format will be downloaded to your computer.

Click the Roster tab

Open the CSV file and select the email addresses you wish to copy. (CSV files will open in Excel or other spreadsheet application.)

Go back to the Slack channel where you want to add the users.

Click Members and click Add people.

Paste (ctrl+v) the list of users in the box and click Add.

Add a Pinned Announcement to LMS

Note: Professors can add a pinned announcement to the Learning Management System (LMS) for students to confirm that they are on the Slack channel.  If they are not, they should contact the Professor (or TA) to get added to the channel(s).

To add a pinned announcement in Brightspace, click Create an announcement from the Announcements panel.

Type the text of your announcement.

Click the menu button next to the title and select Pin to top
