What is the User Digest?

The User Digest is a daily summary email that contains a list of suspected spam messages. This feature makes it easier for you to block or allow emails that may have been quarantined or flagged as spam. This feature helps improve spam detection and increases ITS’s ability to triage higher-risk emails.

Why am I receiving this email?

The new User Digest feature will empower you with additional tools to reduce spam and minimize delays in receiving important emails that were quarantined by email filters. User Digest allows you to act on these messages without needing a support ticket, ensuring emails incorrectly categorized as spam can be removed from quarantine. Using this feature also helps train our email filtering rules to reduce the amount of spam sent to USC inboxes.

What are all the links in the email?

What is the difference between the Spam, Quarantined, and Low Priority Mail Delivered sections of the User Digest email?

Spam – The quarantined table shows messages that were caught by email security and sent to quarantine. These messages were not delivered to you. You may click on the subject line to preview the message. If the message is one you wish to receive, click “Release”. If this is a sender that you wish to always receive emails from, click “Allow Sender.” If this is a message/address you do not want to receive emails from, click “Block Sender.”

The Low Priority Mail table shows messages that have been delivered to your email address. However, these messages may be from unsolicited or bulk email senders. This table allows you to block the sender moving forward or to confirm that this is a sender from whom you wish to receive messages.

Why do I see different lists in my automated daily user digests when I request a new user digest?

When you receive an automated digest, it displays any new emails that may have gotten stuck in your quarantine since the last time you received an automated digest.

When you manually request a new user digest, it gives you a comprehensive list of all emails in your quarantine from the last 2 weeks. Please note that the system does not retain quarantined emails beyond two weeks.

I accidentally blocked a message that I need access to. How do I get that message back?

At the top of the User Digest email, click on the “Request Safe/Blocked Senders List” link. This will provide you with an email that shows all previously allowed or blocked senders. From here, you can choose to allow the sender.

I accidentally allowed a message that I do not wish to receive. How do I block future messages?

You should delete the email in question from your inbox. In addition, you can follow the following steps to remove an allowed sender. At the top of the User Digest email, click on the link “Request Safe/Blocked Senders List”. This will provide you with an email that shows all previously allowed or blocked senders. From here, you can choose to block the sender moving forward.

Can I opt out?

We highly recommend you leverage User Digest as it provides many user benefits.

Benefits:

  • You can release emails you determine to be improperly quarantined, providing more visibility and autonomy over potentially malicious emails filtered from your inbox.
  • You will be periodically updated about the status of emails in your quarantine, if any.
  • You can tag a sender as not spam, ensuring you receive emails to your inbox in the future, or validate the content as spam, preventing future receipt and keeping your inbox clean.

If you want to opt out of User Digest:

  1. At the bottom of the User Digest email, click [Manage My Account].
  2. Navigate to your profile and uncheck the “Send digest with new messages in my End User Digest” box.
User Digest: My Settings
  1. Click Save, and you will no longer receive new user digests.

If you want to continue to receive User Digest, but not see it in your main inbox:

There is a solution you can take if you do not want to see User Digest in your inbox each day. You can route your user digests to a specific folder in your email account, ensuring they do not clutter your inbox. This way, you can still access that information at your convenience. For detailed instructions on how to set this up, please visit How to Automatically Sort Emails Into Specific Outlook Folders.
